To Love Is To Live is Jehnny Beth’s debut full length solo album, but the record is a new step in her really dense career. Jehnny Beth used to be half of the duet John & Jehn; she made her breakthrough as the Savages’ lead singer and has collaborated with such musicians as Gorillaz (We Got the Power) and The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas (Boy/Girl). In films, she has worked with Catherine Corsini (Un Amour impossible) and Alexandre Astier (Kaamelott). She’s a radio and TV host for Beats 1 and Arte, and also a writer, who will soon publish her first collection of erotic short stories entitled C.A.L.M.: (Crimes Against Love Memories), illustrated by Johnny Hostile’s photographs. Jehnny Beth’s prolific inspiration, made of style, sounds, emotions, and contextual encounters is at the center of To Love Is To Live. She hired Atticus Ross, Flood, and Johnny Hostile to produce and take care of a large part of the record’s instrumentation. It is post-punk, industrial new wave, electronic cold wave and viscerally dark rock at the same time.

Avec To Love is to Live, Jehnny Beth appose son seul nom sur un album, pour la première fois de sa dense carrière. Vraiment dense même puisque l’ex-moitié du duo John & Jehn, révélée comme chanteuse du groupe Savages, a notamment pigé chez Gorillaz (We Got the Power), duétisé avec Julian Casablancas des Strokes (Boy/Girl), joué au cinéma (Un amour impossible de Catherine Corsini et Kaamelott d’Alexandre Astier) et fait la présentatrice pour Beats 1) et Arte. Sans parler de C.A.L.M. : Crimes Against Love Memories, un recueil de nouvelles érotiques illustrées par les photos de Johnny Hostile, publié durant l’été 2020. N’en jetez plus ! Cette richesse, stylistique, sonore, émotionnelle ou contextuelle, est au cœur de To Love is to Live qui n’a finalement d’album solo que le nom. Car pour ce trip exigeant et complexe, Jehnny Beth a confié la production et une grande partie de l’instrumentation à Atticus Ross, Flood et Johnny Hostile. Trois complices là pour sculpter un alliage fascinant de post punk, de new wave aux accents industriels, de cold wave électronique, de vraies fausses BO de film et de rock viscéralement dark. Le temps d’une rencontre, la Française revient sur la genèse de ce disque Qobuzissime.

Auf dem Album To Love is to Live setzt Jehnny Beth zum ersten Mal in ihrer produktiven Karriere ihren Namen ohne Begleitung auf das Cover. Und die ist wirklich produktiv, denn die als Sängerin der Gruppe Savages bekannt gewordene, frühere zweite Hälfte des Duos John & Jehn sprang insbesondere bei Gorillaz (We Got the Power) ein, sang im Duett mit Julian Casablancas von den Strokes (Boy/Girl), war in Filmen zu sehen (in Catherine Corsinis französischem Film Un amour impossible und in Alexandre Astiers Fernsehserie Kaamelott) und auch als Journalistin/Radiosprecherin (Start Making Sense für Beats 1) und Fernsehmoderatorin war sie tätig (Echoes auf Arte). Und dann ist da noch C.A.L.M.: Crimes Against Love Memories, ein Band erotischer Erzählungen mit Fotos von Johnny Hostile, der im Sommer 2020 erscheinen soll. Jetzt reicht es aber! Dieser stilistische, klangliche, emotionale oder auch kontextuelle Reichtum steht im Mittelpunkt dieses To Love is to Live, das nur noch dem Namen nach ein Soloalbum ist. Denn Jehnny Beth hat für die Produktion und den Großteil der Instrumentierung Atticus Ross, Flood und Johnny Hostile an Bord geholt, um sich auf diesen anspruchsvollen, komplexen Trip zu begeben. Die drei sind genau die richtigen Kumpels, um eine so faszinierende Legierung zu meistern, bestehend aus Post Punk, Industrial durchsetzt von New Wave, Elektro-Cold Wave, Soundtracks wie aus einem nahegehenden Film und unter die Haut gehendem Dark Rock.
