On 18 June 1989, the people of Poland voted in the second round of parliamentary elections, the first partially free national vote after four decades of Communist rule. It had been two weeks since the first round of voting
saw the pro-democracy opposition party, Solidarity,
win a decisive victory, humiliating the Communist
government and highlighting widespread
public desire for political change. ITN filmed Communist leader Wojciech Jaruzelski voting along with his wife, Barbara Jaruzelska, before venturing out into the capital to capture scenes of daily life as the country entered a period of historic transition.
