ITALY DEPLOYS TROOPS TO STOP ALBANIAN IMMIGRANTS

Puglia, Italy Natsot Duration: 1.11"

Italy has deployed troops along its Adriatic coastline near Brindisi to stem the flow of illegal immigrants crossing by sea from Albania, just 41 nautical miles away. More than 500 soldiers, 50 military vehicles and 4 helicopters will patrol beaches and fields around the clock. Italy estimates that more than 400,000 illegal immigrants are in the country. Authorities detained 1,627 supected illegal immigrants in the first four months of this year. Italy has long been a stepping stone into Western Europe for illegal immigrants from the former Yugoslavia, Albania, Morocco, Tunisia, Kurdistan, China, and elsewhere. Many are stopped at border posts as they try to enter neigbouring countries. Italy is under pressure from some of its European Union neighbours to crack down on illegal immigration.
