What is recycling like in Loja, one of Ecuador’s most eco-conscious cities? Life in Loja’s video tour shows you how recycling helps the environment in the Southern Andes mountains. The video offers reclamation examples along with the benefits of recycling and the facts about the process in present day South America.

This video compilation of one of Life in Loja’s most popular day excursions shows how relatively low tech methods that are energy cost effective have worked well in one of Ecuador’s oldest colonial cities for over a decade.

The Municipal recycling plant collects, treats, and resells solid organic and inorganic wastes from the city of Loja. Eisenia foetida and Lumbricus rubellis, also known as red wigglers or tiger worms, are used in Loja’s natural vermicomposting operation to break down organic wastes into humus which is resold to support the project. Solid wastes are compacted and baled also for resale to manufacturers who use them. Bio-hazardous waste and leachates, as well as non-reusables, are collected and handled by specialists who store them in secure containment facilities and landfills.

The recycling plant also boasts a public school for the workers’ children, nature trails, and the city’s animal rescue shelter. If you would like to arrange a tour of Loja’s award-winning recycling plant, contact Life in Loja at [email protected]
