RUSSIA'S SHOCKING NEW TARIFFS ON CHINA! Russia Curbs Chinese Cars
Russia has significantly increased taxes on imported vehicles to protect the domestic automotive sector. This decision was taken in response to the rapid spread of low-cost vehicles from China following the withdrawal of Western automakers from Russia. Over the last year, Chinese car exports to Russia have increased sevenfold, posing serious competition for domestic manufacturers.
With the withdrawal of Western brands, Chinese automakers such as Chery, Geely and Great Wall Motor have grown rapidly in the market. Today, Chinese brands control around 63% of the Russian car market. While this increase has been observed especially in the internal combustion engine vehicle segment, Russian consumers' interest in electric vehicles has been low.
In an effort to support domestic production and limit imports, the Russian government more than doubled the “recycling fees” for most passenger cars to around 667,000 rubles (around $7,500). These fees function similarly to customs duties and are scheduled to increase by 10-20% each year until 2030. It was also announced that stricter safety and compliance checks will be introduced for imported vehicles.
