🎥 The sinking of the IJN Musashi: a dramatic moment in WWII history. On October 24, 1944, the mighty battleship Musashi, one of the largest ships ever built, met its tragic end during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Overwhelmed by relentless airstrikes from American bombers and torpedo planes, Musashi became a symbol of the end of the battleship era.

Commissioned in 1942, Musashi boasted nine massive 18.1-inch guns and was Japan’s pride. However, by late 1944, after heavy losses, Japan’s fleet was in peril. As U.S. forces closed in on Leyte, Musashi was tasked with stopping the invasion but found itself facing waves of American aircraft.

Despite heroic efforts, Musashi was hit by 17 bombs and 19 torpedoes, sinking by 7:30 PM. Captain Inaguchi’s refusal to abandon ship showed the crew’s determination, but over 1,000 men perished with the ship.
The sinking marked the end of the battleship’s dominance and solidified the power of aircraft carriers. For the U.S., it was a crucial victory in the Pacific. Musashi's fall changed naval warfare forever.
