In the drizzly rain of October 16, 1967, Rick Soderstrom and Steve Schmidt burned their draft cards on the Student Union patio of the University of Illinois. The two war resisters then led a protest march of about sixty to the Selective Service building in Champaign whereupon they were arrested. In the aftermath, rather than accept impending draft, Rick fled to Canada to seek refuge and Steve chose a long jail sentence. They describe their experiences opposing the war in the late 1960s on the University of Illinois campus and discuss the impact of the Vietnam War on student activism. Their presentation was part of a conference titled "Radical Illini: Conversations on Student Activism" that took place on October 4-5, 2019 at the UIUC campus and was based on the 2019 publication of "Radicals in the Heartland: The 1960s Student Protest Movement at the University of Illinois" by Michael V Metz.
