On Nov. 2, 2024, at the Arboretum on the Christ Cathedral campus, Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., gave a talk titled “Our Lady of Guadalupe: Science and the Tilma.” Next to him during its visit to the Diocese of Orange was the Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of four Catholic Church-authorized digital images of the original Guadalupe tilma, which dates to 1531 and is above the main altar at the Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. In the centuries since the apparition in 1531, the Image has become Mexico’s and the Hispanic diaspora’s most popular religious and cultural symbol.
