In this language dispute, a crucial turn came when the budget was to be presented in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Nirmala Sitharaman claimed in an X post that the Tamil Nadu government had replaced the rupee symbol (₹) everywhere in the budget with Tamil text. Sitharaman reacted sharply, writing on X that dividing national symbols for regional pride is not appropriate. She questioned why the DMK did not oppose the symbol '₹' in 2010 when it was adopted, especially since the DMK was part of the UPA government at that time. She also pointed out that the design of the symbol was created by the son of a former DMK legislator. Sitharaman accused the DMK of not only rejecting a national symbol but also insulting the creative contribution of Tamil youth.
