Ola Ugwu (Head of Public and Youth Engagement Programme at the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law) and Dr. Giulia Gentile (Fellow in Law at the London School of Economics (LSE) Law School), interviewed Professor Sergii Koziakov, associate professor of private international law at the Institute of International Relations, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv regarding his experience as Chairman of the Judicial Appointments body of Ukraine on judicial transparency and independence, and Dr. Julinda Beqiraj (Maurice Wohl Senior Fellow in European Law at BIICL) on her involvement with the recent judicial reform process in Albania.

In October 2014, Albania initiated a comprehensive justice reform process that resulted in a thorough amendment of the Albanian constitution, the adoption of core laws regulating the organization and functioning of the judiciary, prosecution and justice governance institutions, as well as in institutional transformations of the judiciary. A similar reform process was undertaken in Ukraine between 2014 -2020.

This podcast, recorded on 21 April 2023, describes the main features of the reforms and discusses their implications for judicial independence and the protection of individual rights in the two countries.
