Mt Elgon National Park, Kenya
February 2012
Philip Chepso (Mt Elgon guides and porters association) leads through the site of the famous Kitum cave in Mount Elgon National Park. The cave extends about 160 metres into the mountain. The walls are rich in salt, and many forest animals (elephants, antilopes,...) are going deep into the dark cave because of their need for salt. Elephants using their tusks to break off pieces of the cave wall which they chew and swallow: You can see clearly, the walls are scratched. Elephants are enlarging the cave over time for many centuries.
We´d like to thank Philip Chepso for interesting talks and guides through the forests and caves of Mt Elgon National Park. Furthermore, many thanks to KWS for their conservation work and warm hospitality.
