Ladakh is a Buddhist-dominated area and hence, you will find many monasteries all across this Union Territory of India. Welcome to Episode 4 of my WINTER LADAKH series. In this video, I am taking you all to two of the famous and oldest monasteries in Ladakh. religion plays an important role in the lives of people from Leh and Ladakh. Thus, paying a visit to a few of the monasteries during your visit to Ladakh is very much recommended. It will not only help you understand the religious aspect of the place but also leave you with a spiritual awakening.

Thiksey Monastery - It is located very close to Leh, just about 19 km from the main town. Thiksey monastery is one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh. It was built in the 15th century. What makes this monastery extraordinary is its structure that resembles the famous Potala Palace in Tibet. Gustor festival takes place here.

Hemis Monastery - It is the largest and richest monastery in Ladakh. Built in the 15th Century, this monastery is located about 40 km from Leh. Thousands of tourists from all across the globe come to Hemis Monastery to celebrate Hemis Festival also known as Tsechu.
