I have had a large garden railway for 25 years now.
But maintenance is getting to be difficult. So I wondered if I could build a small G scale in a shed, that would use some of my small locos and wagons. (45mm gauge, 1:24 scale)
To fit in in the space I soon realised that ‘normal’ points (turnouts) would take up too much room, so I designed a sort of run-through turntable that takes just 8” of space. To ‘service’ up to 4 sidings.

A preliminary plan indicated a two-level layout with a 10” height difference, so to see that a train could climb the 1:14 grades I needed, I checked the trains could get up the grades:

The reason I invented for the short line would be to have a mine where clay was produced on the upper level and the railway would transport this clay to the brickworks on the lower level.
Lots of shunting possibilities and a length of track for trains to run. And I wanted it to be a sort of diorama for photography and videos.

Locos and wagons would be max 8” long and the max train length would be 2’ – ie 3 wagons.
