In this episode of the 'People and Places of North Mayo' video series we visit the Michael Davitt Museum and meet with one of their excellent tour guides Mark Spragg. The museum is houses in the 300 year old, magnificently restored Michael’s church and is located in the picturesque and historic village of Straide, between Ballyvary and Foxford.

We hear some fascinating facts from Mark about Michael Davitt, and learn of his many international connections. Find out how Mahatma Gandhi attributed the origin of his own mass movement of peaceful resistance in India to Davitt and the Land League!

The museum contains an extensive collection of historical artefacts including original documents, photos, Land Acts, letters, postcards, posters, rosary beads and other items connected with Michael Davitt’s life and his campaign work within the National Land League. It is open all year round and welcomes visitors from at home and overseas There is also an excellent audio-visual which enhances the exhibition and a knowledgeable and friendly staff on hand to give a guided tour, if desired.
