It is one of the top tourist destinations in the Peloponnese, famed for its rugged beauty, boutique hotels, restaurants and sunsets.

The island is a monosyllabic rock rising about 100m from the sea and connected to the mainland via a roadway across a man made causeway. On the top is a Byzantine Castle, and ruined medieval town, though the site itself once had an Acropolis dating back 2500 years to the Minoan Civilisation.

Subsequently settled by the Spartans in the 7th Century AD, it was then subject to many sieges and changed hands several times between the Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans and Greeks.

Below the ruined upper town and castle sits the lower town, rebuilt after the Greek revolution of 1821 and catering for tourists. Surrounded by walls, and defensive fortifications Monemvasia offers a unique experience for the visitor, and is highly recommended as a 2 day, 1 night stop during a tour of the Peloponnese in Greece.
