📍 NOBORIBETSU, nestled amidst natural splendor, boasts a rich past. During the Edo Period, its geothermal valley, Jigokudani (Hell Valley), fascinated travelers. Monk Enku carved a Kannon statue here, and explorer Takeshiro Matsuura extolled its allure. In the Meiji Era, merchant Hanbei Okada built a bathhouse, while Kinzo Takimoto championed ONSEN healing. Notable moments include the discovery of Karurusu Onsen, the birth of artist Mashiho Chiri, and the establishment of Dai-ichi Takimotokan. Noboribetsu’s rejuvenating hot springs continue to beckon visitors seeking solace and beauty.
🌋 Up until the Edo Period (1603-1868):
Noboribetsu Jigokudani: This geothermal valley, also known as "Hell Valley," has been a prominent feature since ancient times. Its eerie landscape, with steaming vents and sulfurous fumes, captivated travelers.
Daimoku Stone and Natatsukuri Kannon Statue: In 1666, the monk Enku carved a Kannon statue using a hatchet while traveling around southern Hokkaido. This statue is now enshrined in a corner of Noboribetsu Jigokudani Observation Hill.
Mogami Tokunai's Visit (Around 1785): Mogami Tokunai, a visitor, recorded his experience in the book "Ezo Soshi," describing the valley's otherworldly beauty.
🏯 Meiji Era (1868-1912):
Hanbei Okada's Contribution (1857): Hanbei Okada, a merchant who mined sulfur in Jigokudani, built a bathhouse for laborers at his own expense. This marked the beginning of Noboribetsu Onsen as a healing destination.
Kinzo Takimoto's Influence (1858): Kinzo Takimoto, known as the founder of healing ONSEN, privately established an ONSEN inn. His wife, Sata, was cured of a severe skin disease through ONSEN treatment.
Construction of Yakushi Nyorai-do (1861): A retainer of the Nanbu clan was reportedly cured of an eye disease by washing his eyes in the ONSEN beneath Yakushi Nyorai-do.
🌟 Recent Developments:
Discovery of Karurusu Onsen (1886): Aiki Hino, a clerk, found the source of this ONSEN, adding to Noboribetsu's allure.
Dai-ichi Takimotokan (1890): An indoor bath was constructed, attracting visitors seeking healing.
Kyukitsu Hino's Exploration (1897): Kyukitsu Hino discovered another ONSEN, which cured his gastric catarrh.
Road Development (1901): A new road between Noboribetsu Onsen and Noboribetsu facilitated travel.
Birth of Mashiho Chiri (1903): The renowned artist and illustrator was born in Noboribetsu.
Noboribetsu, with its rich history and rejuvenating hot springs, continues to beckon travelers seeking solace and natural beauty. 🌿🌊🏞️
