The Akron Public Schools Board of Education has voted to accept the resignation of embattled Superintendent Dr. Michael Robinson, two weeks after an independent investigation accused him of violating numerous district policies and fostering a "toxic workplace culture" built around "fear."

The board met for nearly three hours in executive session Monday night before finally emerging for a public vote regarding Robinson's departure. The final vote tally was 4-3 in favor of accepting the resignation agreement, which includes a $200,000 settlement for Robinson and a vow from him to not take certain legal actions against the district.

Robinson was initially placed on leave two weeks ago after the report's findings were made public, at which time Executive Director for School Leadership Mary Outley was made interim superintendent.

In a second surprise move Monday after Robinson's resignation was approved, the board voted by an identical 4-3 margin to make Outley the new permanent superintendent, pending an agreement on a contract.

“This is an exciting time for Akron Public Schools,” said Carla Jackson, President of the Akron Board of Education. “We are confident in Ms. Outley's leadership, deep understanding of our district and unwavering commitment to our students. Her extensive experience and strong relationships across the district will be invaluable as we move forward.”
