A very rare footpath level crossing in Wareham. Previously, this crossing had no barriers, just alarms and the large halogen miniature red/green warning lights. Due to excessive misuse, in 2010, electric gates were installed which are manned by an attendant in a box, from around 8am to 6pm. The gates are closed right before the warning lights change to red, and opened after the train has passed. These gates are suppose to be temporary, however Network Rail have not been able to acquire a suitable alternative to replace the crossing. Closing the crossing has been widely disputed by locals, and there is insufficient space for a new footbridge or subway. An upgrade to an automated crossing with automatic barriers has been seen as a high risk still, considering the nearby Poole level crossing on the high street is a further significant problem.
