The debate was hosted by the UCT Debating Union at UCT's upper campus on 12 September 2014. The motion was "THW would ban politically aligned organisations from running for SRC."

The history of South African student politics is a long and complicated one. While in the past national student organisations helped fight injustice, since the advent of democracy in 1994, many of the parties affiliated with national political movements have turned campus politics into a proxy war for their parent parties. Some universities, such as the University of the Free State have banned political parties from competing in SRC elections, in an effort to realign student politics, and the SRC, with the specific needs of the university while others say that nationally aligned movements still have a very real and important role to play in student politics.
