Toots Shor's story is one of the most heartbreaking rises and falls in New York history.

He comped meals for every friend down on their luck, extended credit to athletes who never paid, gambled, ignored the IRS, until 1971, when federal authorities padlocked the doors over $269,000 in back taxes.

Toots died in 1977, broke, living at the Drake Hotel on charity from the same people he'd once fed for free. He didn't lose his restaurant to a landlord. He gave it away— one free meal, one forgiven debt, one act of generosity at a time, until nothing was left but the memory of what friendship used to cost.
