Active transport is a cellular process that moves substances across a cell membrane from a low concentration to a high concentration, against the concentration gradient. It requires energy, usually in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), to move substances.
Active transport is important for cell survival and many biological processes, including:
Nutrient absorption: Cells use active transport to absorb nutrients like glucose, amino acids, and ions.
Excretion: Active transport helps cells excrete toxins.
Signal transduction: Active transport is involved in signal transduction.
Biochemical pathways: Active transport is used in many biochemical pathways, such as proton gradient generation in chloroplasts and chemosynthesis in mitochondria.
Active transport is performed by transport proteins, or pumps, in the cell membrane. There are two types of active transport:
Primary active transport: Uses ATP
Secondary active transport: Uses an electrochemical gradient
Active transport is different from passive transport, which is the movement of substances across a cell membrane without requiring energy.
