Typhoon Koinu is rapidly developing this evening as it cruises northwesterly through the Philippine Sea. The storm is anticipated to strike Taiwan later in the week, and could also affect the northernmost Philippine islands with strong winds and torrential rain. The long-term track forecast remains uncertain, although it's clear that the storm will intensify substantially and is likely to reach Category 3 typhoon status later in the week.

The storm is currently expected to make landfall in southern Taiwan near the end of the week as a typhoon, with potentially extreme rainfall over the eastern mountains resulting in over 1000mm of accumulations.
