With the fame of being one of the largest churches in India, majestic St. Philomena’s Church of Mysore, India, captivates everyone with its architectural excellence. This is one of the tallest churches in Asia and it also boasts of being the second largest church in Asia. The full name is the Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Philomena. It is also known as St. Joseph's Cathedral.

Description -
This church is situated about 2 km away from the Mysore Palace. Quite close to the city bus stand with a distance of only 3 km between them and hence St. Philomena's Church is easily accessible. Located on the Ashoka Road of Mysore, it can be easily accessed by road. Tourists can either hire a taxi or just take a tuk-tuk or auto-rickshaw to the church.

St. Philomena’s Church was first built in 1843 to serve the British officers stationed at Mysore and Srirangapatna. It was initially a simple, wooden structure for over a century before plans were laid down for a new, majestic structure in 1933. The Maharaja of Mysore laid the foundation stone of the church on 28 October 1933. The present church, completed in 1936.

It was built to honor the memory of Saint Philomena, a Latin Catholic Saint and martyr of the Roman Catholic Church. The relic of Saint Philomena is preserved in a catacomb below the main altar.

It was designed by a French architect called Daly. The design is inspired by the beautiful Cologne Cathedral of Germany. The Neo-Gothic or Victorian Gothic style of architecture was the popular style followed in Europe during that period of time. The architecture of St. Philomena’s Church is a majestic work of art.

You can visit the church till 6 in the evening as the timings of St. Philomena’s Church are from 05.00 am to 06.00 pm. It is always better to visit in the evening as then you can watch the church is being illuminated. Every Sunday and on the festival, special masses are organized while everyday masses are conducted in the morning and evenings. On 11th August, the annual feast is organized at the church. Photography is not allowed inside the church hall.
