When we think about medieval castles our imaginations soon turn to the dungeons, a dark place, walls dripping with fetid water and the clanking noise of shackles clanking against stone. The poor prisoner barely alive, chained up, sitting in filth, forgotten in the cold and damp. A dungeon by its very design was meant to crush the spirit and dehumanise the captive.
