Bangladesh Turmoil & Unrest Causes Major Fall In Medical Tourists To India | Firstpost Tech & Trade

The recent violent unrest in Bangladesh has impacted the Indian tourism sector, particularly medical tourism. Over the past three months, a student-led protest against quotas in government jobs led to the resignation of long-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the establishment of an interim government. Violent protests before and after Hasina’s ouster have resulted in at least 650 deaths. However, India is experiencing a different impact from Bangladesh’s agitation. The country is a major medical destination for Bangladeshis seeking treatment, who typically account for 50% to 60% of India’s international medical tourism inflow. According to the Indian market research agency CareEdge Ratings, the unrest has significantly affected medical tourism from Bangladesh to India. A considerable number of these travellers have either cancelled or postponed their visits. CareEdge Ratings anticipates that if the unrest persists, the footfalls from Bangladesh are likely to decline by 10-15% in 2024.
