Part 3 - For the past few weeks, I’ve been surveying the news landscape and can’t help but feel depressed about the dearth of wisdom among our leaders, and of course among the populace they govern or teach. I have resisted the temptation to respond with a “holier-than-thou” attitude, and instead have taken my cue from Steven Covey’s 5th habit of highly successful people - Seek first to understand, then to be understood. The Christian adage, “first take the plank out of your own eye,” is also informing my approach.

In light of the above, I would like to begin a series on wisdom, surveying the best from our greatest historical traditions. I will go in roughly chronological order beginning with the ancient Hebrew wisdom tradition, then on to Eastern traditions from India to China, then Classical Greek and Roman wisdom, the Muslim wisdom tradition, then on to the modern age. Such a survey will broaden our understanding of ourselves, and the greater world community.

I strongly feel that merely sitting back and observing the folly before our eyes with an air of judgement is not an adequate response. I hope that I, and you as well, will come away from this series feeling more equipped and empowered to respond effectively to the crises before us.
