The goal is that, at one point, after having associated long enough the scale degrees to their names, you'll be able to recognize them instinctively by just feeling them in an unpronounced melody. You'll recognize if what is played is a do, or a so, or any other degree of the scale! Thanks to that, you'll be able to reconstruct the melody in its harmonic context and/or improvise in the same key, find the chords, transcribe the song, sing better in tune, and so on! Like how naming colours helps you to better identify, describe, differentiate them.
