Aboriginal Initiation Ceremonies in the Pilbara. Part 7b: The marlulu has been travelling to neighbouring communities gathering a "mob" who will conduct his initiation when he returns to the Law Ground where his family will be waiting to receive him at the meeting camp. In this video, the mangali is shown surrounded by admiring children after being wellcomed home and before being taken out to the Law Ground after a supper with the family. The marlulu will return to the meeting camp in a month or more as a "Nuju", dressed in the finery of an newly-initiated man. Meanwhile, on the morning of the next day the visitors, including the "mangali" (doctor) return to the meeting camp where gifts are exchanged and relationships negotiated in an exchange ceremony. These days, the gifts are mostly blankets and money, but in the past they would be finely carved weapons and tools and other valued objects. Because certain relatives of the initiated boy cannot speak to the mangali and his associates, all relationships and historical connections have to be clarified, so that people will know how to behave next time they meet. In addition, the initiated boy is now a man, and relationships have to be readjusted. After this short ceremony is concluded, the tired visitors leave for their home communities, which may be hundreds of kilometres distant. In this video filmed by Dr Bill Day in 2002, the ceremonies take place in the little Banyjima community at the foot of the Hamersley Ranges, between Wittenoom and Auski Roadhouse.
