Discovering Potosi, Bolivia | The Shocking Story of Riches to Rags | Indian Travel Couple

Описание к видео Discovering Potosi, Bolivia | The Shocking Story of Riches to Rags | Indian Travel Couple

After exploring Sucre, it was time to travel to Potosi, around 150 km from Sucre.

In this video, we talk about the history of the city of silver (ciudad de la plata), Potosi.

Cerro Rico or the Rich Mountain, that towers over the city of Potosi was home to silver mines discovered in the 16th Century. After the discovery, the amount of silver created immense wealth for the Spanish Empire at that time.

However, the working conditions in the mines of Cerro Rico resulted in millions of deaths of mine workers. The reason, why Cerro Rico in Quechua is also called 'The Mountain that Eats Men'.

The silver made the Empire wealthy, however, it did not improve the lives of the workers and natives. By the time, Bolivia gained independence, the silver was mostly gone. Many workers still work today in the mines in the hopes of what is left and other minerals.

We did not take the silver mine tour, the most popular activity of Potosi, as we were not comfortable with it. But we explored the city on our own and walked along its alleys. The architecture, and the buildings close to the Centro show the wealth that the city must have once produced.

The Potosi Cathedral, Casa de la Moneda or the Royal Mint, several other Cathedrals, the Obelisk of Potosi are some of the remarkable places to see in the city.

We also tried the local food like Salteñas and Kalapukara, a soup served with an actual volcanic rock.

Potosi, for the combination of this fascinating story, food and architecture became more than just a stopover on our way to Uyuni, our next destination.
