Within Southern Mozambique’s Maputo Province, we have primarily focused on Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) to protect the local population and reduce the prevalence of the malaria parasite, in conjunction with the government’s program of bed net distribution in selected areas. Our pilot IRS project has been running since 2013 in the Boane province under the Goodbye Malaria banner, which in turn was based on the original LSDI program that ran from 1999-2010. The current program is working very closely with the National Ministry of Health and the National Malaria Control Program, with the government supporting the project through the provision of insecticide and access to training facilities in Namaacha. Employees are paid through the government according to national pay structures so as to not distort the employment market.

LSDI 2 is integrated with and is not a substitute for other initiatives run by Mozambique’s National Malaria Control Program, including bed net distribution and improved diagnosis and treatment of Malaria. The Mozambican program is governed by a private sector management approach that focuses on team building through training programs, instilling pride in the frontline teams through branded uniforms and community outreach about the life-saving importance of the work, and non-monetary incentives such as coolers for spray operators and end-of-season events to celebrate the successes of the work. The program also seeks to use continual rather than seasonal employment to reduce attrition.

Additionally, the program utilizes technology such as GPS to facilitate tracking of the IRS program and ensure spray coverage reaches the required percent of houses. The results from the pilot project are preliminary as the first Goodbye Malaria spray round started in October 2013, but the initial results appear very positive. The population of Boane district (120,000) has been protected for two consecutive years, and prevalence has been reduced by 70%. We continue our fight against Malaria and strive to eradicate Malaria in Africa.
