The Big Island of Hawai`i has 3 subspecies of `Elepaio: C.s. sandwichensis, C.s. bryani, and C.s. ridgwayi. Ridgwayi is the most common and the only one to inhabit the upland rainforest. Adults have a prominent white rump and two white wingbars with additional white speckling on the throat, breast, and head. In females the throat is nearly all white. In males the throat is speckled with black. For all three Big Island subspecies, the tail-up pose is classic and usually the first key to identifying this bird. It shows little fear of humans. An imitation of its call will often entice the bird to approach.
