STORYLINE:
North Korea marked the 14th anniversary of the death of its founding leader Kim Il Sung on Tuesday.
APTN North Korea filmed thousands of Pyongyang citizens laying flowers at the foot of giant statue of Kim on a hill overlooking the capital and bowing as they paid respects to their late leader.
"Our fatherly President always found himself among our people, throughout all his life, and devoted his all to the happiness of the people. Our fatherly President will be together with our people today, tomorrow and forever," said Won Kil U, one of those present on Mansu hill.
Kim Il Sung died on 8 July 1994, aged 92. North Korea still accords him the title of President. The country is ruled by his son Kim Jong Il.
State media reported that Kim Jong Il on Tuesday visited the memorial palace, where his father's body lies in state.
North Korea will mark the 60th anniversary of its founding in 1948, this September.
Official media has been trumpeting the President Kim Il Sung's era to its citizens to mark this 60th anniversary.
According to the state's official history, Kim Il Sung defeated the Japanese occupiers of the Korean peninsula and founded the North Korean state.
Historians outside North Korea say that Kim Il Sung did take part in some guerrilla activities against the Japanese, but was brought into Korea after the end of the Japanese occupation by the Soviet military, who established him as one of North Korea's early leaders.
