Welcome to the first episode in a brand new series exploring the Lost Waterways of South Yorkshire. In this video, we begin our journey along the long-forgotten Dearne & Dove Canal, a once-bustling industrial waterway that connected Swinton to Barnsley, now lost to time and beyond restoration.

Starting in Swinton, we explore the canal’s first surviving section — a stretch that still holds water and passes through a series of abandoned and derelict locks. Once vital to the transport of coal and goods during the height of the Industrial Revolution, the Dearne & Dove Canal played a crucial role in the development of South Yorkshire’s canal and transport network.

But today, this historic route lies overgrown, infilled, and fragmented — a victim of industrial decline, urban development, and decades of neglect. Unlike other UK canals, this one is unlikely ever to be restored.
