Our DH 89 Dragon Rapide is nearing rebuild completion, and as a tribute to the restorers and the aircraft itself we wanted to give an insight into the history of this versatile and successful De Havilland aircraft type. Restoration has been in progress since the 1990s and much of the airframe has been entirely rebuilt. The intention was to restore the Rapide to flying condition but the decision was made after many years of painstaking work to rebuild as a display aircraft. During restoration of one of the wing spars a bullet hole was uncovered which had split the length of the timber. The aircraft had continued flying for years with this damage being undiscovered. The video offers some possible explanations as to when and how this damage was sustained. Some of the restoration team are of a vintage to have benefited from a full De Havilland apprenticeship which has been invaluable in the knowledge and skill it brings to the reconstruction work.


The DH89 Dragon Rapide was also known as the "Dragon Six", due to the six-cylinder Gypsy Engines that powered it. It was one of the last in a long line of biplane aircraft from de Havilland.
