Part 1 of a shot-by-shot hickory golf course vlog featuring Connecticut hickory golfer Christian Williams playing the front 9 at the Donald Ross designed Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, CT, at the inaugural Smith-Collett Classic. Golf has been played at Shennecossett ("Shenny" to the locals) since 1898, but the current layout is mostly a Donald Ross design dating to 1919. A land swap with Pfizer in 1997 led to a significant rerouting, redesign of a couple holes, and addition of four new holes by designer Mark Mungeam. Golf architecture blogger Bethpage Black Metal wrote extensively on the redesign that you can read here: https://bethpageblackmetal.com/2019/1...

The inaugural Smith-Collett Classic was organized by the Connecticut Hickory Golfers Association and is named after Alex Smith and Glenna Collett-Vare. Smith was a two-time U.S. Open champion (1906,1910) and was the head pro at Shenny from 1921-1925. Collett-Vare was a Connecticut native, six-time winner of the U.S. Women's Amateur championship in the 1920s and 1930s, and frequent winner of tournaments at Shenny. She was considered the "Bobby Jones" of women's golf and is one of the greatest women golfers of all-time.
