In 2013, the gaming world was treated to a visually stunning and thematically complex experience with "Killer is Dead," a title written by the renowned Suda51, an experimental game creator known for his unique style showcased his past works; Killer 7 and No-More-Heroes. With its unique blend of stylish aesthetics, philosophical undertones, and unconventional storytelling, "Killer is Dead" definitely has a style you just don’t see in other titles that dominate the AAA gaming industry.
One of the most striking aspects of "Killer is Dead" is its artistic design. The game's visuals are a testament to Suda51's penchant for creating unique and visually arresting worlds. Set in a near-futuristic world, you play as the spirit police like in yu-yu-hakasho,there’s all these other worldly baddies hurting humans of the living world. As an assassin for the spirit police the very first mission has you completing a bounty for Croninburg Monster Alice in Wonderland. A boss that’s basically shorthand for, Woah look how trippy our game is, it’s Alice in wonderland but darker. Later on in the game you collect a bounty on demon possessed Tomas the Tank Engine.
Mind you this is all going on while the game combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with a cyberpunk flair. The result is a mesmerizing blend of neon-lit streets, traditional Japanese gardens, and otherworldly landscapes that seamlessly shift between beauty and brutality. This visual duality is a recurring theme throughout the game, mirroring the moral ambiguity of its protagonist, Mondo Zappa. Woah he’s such a bad boy. So cool.

The gameplay in "Killer is Dead" is a fast-paced mix of hack-and-slash combat and episodic storytelling. Players take on various assassination missions that pit them against bizarre and formidable foes, each with their unique quirks and abilities. The combat is stylish and visually captivating, with Mondo wielding a katana and a cybernetic arm that can transform into a variety of deadly weapons. These cyber arm weapons mind you are unlocked in the game's unique "Gigolo Mode" which adds an unusual dating element, where Mondo tries to charm women he meets, by making awkward eye contact and will make your live stream viewers who just joined ask if you’re allowed to be playing this on a streaming website. I also stream btw, shameless plug, please follow me. It helps out alot.
