Kathy Laliberte describes step by step how to grow Sedum autumn joy.

1. Autumn Joy is a variety of the perennial sedum that adds beauty to your garden from mid-Summer right through late Fall. However, without proper attention a sedum Autumn Joy plant will grow to big and begin to flop.

2. To keep your sedum plant from flopping, you'll need to divide it every two years. This task can be performed in late autumn or early spring.

3. Cut back your sedum's stems to make the plant easier to handle.

4. Use a shovel or pitch fork to dig up the entire sedum plant. Getting the sedum out is easier than you might think because the roots are fairly shallow. Place the plant on a tarp.

5. Break the plant in half using a shovel and put one piece back into your hole. Add the other half of your plant to a different section of your garden or give it to a friend.

6. Replant one-half of your sedum by placing the plant back into the hole. Fill the hole with excess dirt and gently pat down.

7. Enjoy your tall standing sedum Autumn Joy for years to come. Remember: cut the plant in half every two years to keep it from flopping!
