The other day I was riding my motorcycle through the twisties in the Santa Monica Mountains when something wild happened...

The road ended, and I came upon this epic summit. So, I pulled off into the dirt and gazed at a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean.

Then I saw a side trail leading up into the mountains. Some random people were walking up it with instruments.

One guy said to me, “Hey, nice bike.”

I said, “Thanks,” and started walking up the trail, curious as to what was going on.

It was about 6 P.M., and since I was solo, I walked ahead carrying my motorcycle gear.

One guy was coming back down the trail, and I asked him, “What’s ahead?”

He said, “Are you here to graffiti? (as he smoked a cigarette)”

I said, “No.”

He said, “Ok, just keep going, you’re almost there.”

After about a mile, I came to this incredible lookout. It appeared to be a stone foundation from something that had long been gone. It had graffiti all over it, and so did many of the rocks out there.

Suddenly, all these people started showing up and putting down blankets on this lookout.

Then, a pop-up concert started right on this mountaintop. The sun was setting to the right, and on the left, a full moon rising.

Everyone started dancing and hanging out. It was a trip.

After talking with a few of them, apparently people have been going out to this spot a couple times a year on full moons to play music, do spoken word... etc.

I’d just stumbled upon the whole thing.

That’s exactly how I discovered my system for the fretboard.

I wasn’t trying to learn this exact way; I was just trying to make sense of the neck.

And over about 17 years of jamming, playing shows, teaching, and asking pro players what they were doing, I realized...

They were all using the same thing.

It’s the easiest and fastest way I’ve seen to understand the fretboard for RHYTHM and LEAD.
