New Covent Garden Flower Market

A social documentary ahead of its time, Night Shift became a long-running cult series of five minute shows about night workers on the UK's main commercial television channel ITV1.

The show's original run was from 1992 to 1999 and was filmed entirely hand-held in an 'as it happens' style, very uncommon at the time. It was presented Colin Bennett (known for TV shows including Metal Mickey, Luna and his role as 'Mr Bennett the care-taker' on Tony Hart's BBC series Take Hart, then more recently The Full Monty series on Disney+ ) who would often speak to the crew, involving them in the show; again a style unheard of back then. These were Graham Daniels (producer/director), Nick Clarke (producer/sound), Nic Small (camera), and later series Dave Hicks (camera) who also happened to film the title sequence too.

Over the years Night Shift took viewers everywhere from inside a nuclear power station, intensive care wards in hospitals, a police response unit, out with the fire brigade, a night bus journey, a lap-dancing club, and even a milk delivery round in the early hours! It was also the first ever television programme allowed to film inside Gatwick Airport's air-traffic control tower (before the BBC series Airport claimed it was them!).
