Sometime after midnight on June 17, 1972, a seemingly unremarkable incident kicked off what was quite possibly the American political scandal of the century. Clawing its way as high as the office of President Richard Nixon, Watergate rocked the people’s trust in the federal government and forever changed the country’s political landscape.

But tonight, the dust is being shaken off the past. The scandals and secrecy of that fateful summer will find themselves revisited and told anew, and who would be more qualified for such a job than utterly uninterested high school student Sarah Harper?

Yes, tonight Sarah will prove to you all that she has not, in fact, learned nothing as she guides us through the sneaking suspicions and murky lies of that fateful scandal. Will the president truly be involved? Where’s the water or the gate? What does “classified” even mean? What’s Monica Lewinsky doing here? Will karma come back to bite?

I suppose Nixon should’ve known better.

Every year, UNC student theatre company LAB! Theatre devotes its final show slot of the year to an original commission project. Selected during the previous summer, the show is written by a student and receives constant support from the LAB! Board throughout the year in the form of community readings, funding, and a devoted venue.

This year, the LAB! commission project was "Watergate: The Musical Experience," written by William Becker, directed by Christina Polge and Alex Lankford, and produced by MB Connolley. The original musical is an action-packed, fourth wall-breaking experience of highly questionable historical accuracy. Combining absurd satire with thoughtful commentary on the state of our county's political system, it's an exploration of how reflecting on our history can be both meaningful and utterly ridiculous at the same time.

The show had its premiere run April 24-27, 2025.
