in today's video, we'll explore how the food we eat goes through various processes to eventually become poop.
First, we take food into our mouths in the form of bites, a process called ingestion. Then, we chew the food with our teeth, breaking it down into smaller parts—this is known as mechanical digestion. During this process, saliva mixes with the food, softening it for easier swallowing. Saliva also contains an enzyme called amylase, which starts the chemical breakdown of carbohydrates in the food.
After chewing, the food is swallowed and enters the esophagus, closing the epiglottis on its way. The epiglottis is a lid-like organ that helps direct food and air. When we swallow, it closes to prevent food particles from entering our airway, and once we've swallowed, it reopens to allow air to flow into the lungs.
Once the food enters the esophagus, it moves towards the stomach. The esophagus is a muscular tube that pushes food to the stomach through a process called peristalsis.
The stomach, a J-shaped round organ located between the esophagus and the duodenum, contains gastric juice that chemically digests the food, breaking it down into smaller particles. At this stage, the food looks like a liquid and is called chyme. Food stays in the stomach for 2 to 6 hours before entering the small intestine as chyme.
The small intestine, a tube-like organ about 22 to 25 feet long, is where the absorption of digested food takes place. Essential components like amino acids, fatty acids, glucose, glycerol, water, nucleotides, vitamins, and minerals are absorbed into the blood. As the absorption process continues, the food starts to solidify again.
After the small intestine, the food enters the large intestine. Although shorter than the small intestine, the large intestine has a wider diameter, hence its name. In the large intestine, absorption continues, with water and electrolytes being absorbed into the blood.
Finally, the remaining food hardens into poop, which is stored in the rectum, the last part of the large intestine, before being expelled from the body through the anus.
