Leroy is a fan-favorite companion mod for *Fallout: New Vegas*, adding a quirky, talkative character to accompany the player across the Mojave Wasteland. As a former scavenger from Freeside, Leroy has seen it all and loves to tell tales of his adventures, from near-death experiences with deathclaws in Quarry Junction to surviving an ambush by fiends on the outskirts of Vault 3. He's also a walking encyclopedia of wasteland trivia, dropping facts about NCR troop movements, pre-war history, and even the origins of odd items like Nuka-Cola Victory. However, Leroy’s chatter can sometimes get a bit excessive—especially when you’re trying to sneak past a group of Legion assassins or have a tense showdown with Benny in the Tops. His constant storytelling can break the immersion in these moments, making him both a beloved and frustrating companion.
In comparison to other New Vegas companions like Boone, who is stoic and quiet with a dark backstory, or Veronica, whose lighthearted humor contrasts with her serious Brotherhood of Steel roots, Leroy’s non-stop commentary makes him stand out. Unlike Cass, who only speaks up when the moment calls for it, Leroy can't seem to keep quiet, even when it would be wiser to. While Boone delivers somber lines like, “If only you could see the Mojave before the war,” Leroy would be more likely to pipe in with an anecdote about an ill-fated run-in with a radscorpion at the Mojave Outpost. His personality makes for entertaining travel, but can also spoil the atmosphere during more serious, dramatic scenes, like the Battle of Hoover Dam or the showdown with Ulysses at the Divide.
Other companion mods, like Willow or Niner, offer more balanced conversational styles, with moments of insight but plenty of silence when the situation demands it. Niner, in particular, offers a similar sense of wasteland grit but with fewer interruptions, letting the player soak in the mood of darker locations like the Sierra Madre. Meanwhile, mods like Russell deliver a more stoic and narrative-driven companion experience, making Leroy’s constant prattle seem even more jarring by comparison. Whether you're trekking through Black Mountain or making the rounds at the Strip, Leroy’s tendency to talk your ear off can make him either a lovable rogue or an annoyance, depending on your mood. But with the Radio New Vegas soundtrack playing in the background, sometimes having Leroy by your side, humming along to "Big Iron," is worth the extra chatter.
