Canine brucellosis is a contagious bacterial infection caused by *Brucella canis*. It primarily affects dogs but can also pose a zoonotic risk, meaning it can be transmitted to humans, though human infections are rare. In dogs, it typically spreads through contact with infected reproductive tissues, urine, or milk, and it is most commonly transmitted during mating.

Symptoms in Dogs:
**Reproductive issues**: Abortion in females (usually late-term), infertility in both males and females, swollen testicles in males, and vaginal discharge in females.
**General symptoms**: Lethargy, loss of appetite, back pain (from infection of the spine), and swollen lymph nodes.
**Chronic infection**: Over time, untreated brucellosis can lead to more serious conditions such as inflammation of joints (arthritis) or the spine, as well as eye infections.

Diagnosis:
Brucellosis in dogs is diagnosed through blood tests that detect the presence of Brucella canis bacteria or antibodies. Additional diagnostic tools such as bacterial cultures or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests can also confirm infection.

Treatment:
Treatment is challenging because brucellosis is hard to completely eliminate from an infected dog. Antibiotic therapy (often a combination of different antibiotics) is used but doesn't always guarantee full recovery. Spaying or neutering is recommended to reduce the risk of spread, and in breeding kennels, infected animals are usually isolated or removed.

Prevention:
Regular testing in breeding dogs.
Quarantining new dogs until they are confirmed negative for the infection.
Immediate isolation and treatment of infected animals.

For humans, proper hygiene when handling infected animals or materials can minimize the risk of transmission.
