🎖️ Captain Joseph J. “Jocko” Clark — The Fighting Lady’s First Skipper

📌 Captain Joseph James Clark was the first commanding officer of USS Yorktown (CV‑10) when she was commissioned in 1943.

💥 Known by his nickname “Jocko,” Clark was already an experienced naval aviator and officer who believed passionately in the power of aircraft carriers — at a time when carriers were reshaping naval warfare. 

🛳️ Under Clark’s command, Yorktown began operations in the Pacific in 1943, launching her first combat strikes on Marcus Island on 31 August that year. 

✈️ Clark’s leadership saw Yorktown’s air squadrons striking targets in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands that were key to defeating Japan. 

📈 Clark’s combat leadership was so effective that he was promoted to Rear Admiral in early 1944, and later went on to command entire carrier task groups and the U.S. 7th Fleet
