Alternatives to breast milk
In earlier times, when a mother's milk was insufficient, unavailable, or when the mother was unwell and unable to breastfeed, the fibre of a plant called Bandanaru (also known as Golithatte, Akshate Balli, Climbing Bridelia, Bridelia scandens, or Bridelia stipularis) also considered as a best alternative to to breastmilk, was used to prepare a medicinal concoction. This mixture was given to infants as a supplement, to aid in nourishment and health.Take one fistful of the plant's vine fiber, and add one liter of water to it. Boil and reduce the mixture to approximately 750 ml.
Add about 400 ml of cow's milk to the reduced decoction.
Bring the mixture to a thorough boil again.
Set it aside and add stone sugar.
Allow it to cool down completely.
Feed the baby occasionally, as needed.
Do not reheat the Kashaya. Prepare a fresh batch daily.
Amruta Kalpa was traditionally given to infants as a nourishing food supplement to promote strength. This preparation consisted of clarified butter (ghee) and honey, mixed thoroughly until fully blended without separation.
However, the two ingredients should not be in equal proportions—one must be slightly more than the other to maintain balance and efficacy. Dosage varies according to the infant's age, ranging from a few drops to spoonfuls. Once well mixed, the baby was allowed to lick small portions slowly, making it a gentle and effective form of nourishment.
Amruta Kalpa was considered a wholesome and strengthening food for infants
It is essential to maintain hygiene and cleanliness throughout the preparation and feeding process.
