Released in 1987 by Rainbow Arts and developed by Time Warp, The Great Giana Sisters is one of the most famous and talked-about platform games on the Commodore 64. Players guide Giana through a surreal dream world packed with hazards, enemies, and precision jumps, all in a quest to reach a giant diamond and wake from her dream.

The gameplay is classic side-scrolling platform action spread across 33 increasingly demanding levels. Giana can jump on enemies, collect gems, and use power-ups that grant new abilities such as projectile attacks or temporarily disabling foes. Tight controls and fast-paced level design demand accuracy, timing, and memorisation to progress.

On the C64, the game stood out for its smooth scrolling and colourful visuals, pushing the hardware impressively hard. Chris Hülsbeck’s soundtrack became legendary, with its energetic and memorable tunes playing a huge role in the game’s enduring reputation.

While The Great Giana Sisters was praised on release, its strong resemblance to Super Mario Bros. led to legal pressure from Nintendo, resulting in the game being withdrawn from sale in the UK.
