This work seeks to show, through an overview of current scientific facts and theories, the philosophical framework of the methods of science and theology, and the doctrinal teachings of faith, the extent to which Catholic Christianity and the strictly scientific theories of evolution can be reconciled and what questions are still to be answered. While careful distinction among the methods of empirical science, philosophy, and theology leads to the resolution of many objections to the compatibility of the science of evolution and Catholic theology, there are some aspects that will continue to cause tension.

Fr. Kevin W. Vogel is a priest for the Archdiocese of Omaha, Nebraska. In preparation for ordination to the Catholic priesthood, he prepared and defended this thesis as part of the Master of Arts degree program at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri.
