In this video, I explore how to train like Guts from Berserk and provide a full Guts workout to follow.

The key thing we’re trying to emulate with a Guts workout is his ability to swing his gigantic sword, The Dragon Slayer. This would take tremendous strength in the rotational plane, and a huge amount of stability in the torso. That, in turn, would develop the kind of thick waist we see in the artwork.

To mimic this, we can use a variety of tools in a Guts workout: clubbells, mace bells, kettlebells, etc. we can also use other rotational movements, such as kick throughs, one arm push ups, lizard crawls, cable woodchopper, etc.

Also important is endurance. Guts not only has to carry his armour and huge sword around with him, he also has to endure long, drawn-out fights. To mimic this, we need to train for strength endurance. This is where tools like kettlebells and club bells once again make sense for a Guts workout: allowing us to use longer rep ranges under resistance. Loaded carries, of course, are ideal to emulate carrying a huge sword around all day!
