High heels didn’t begin as fashion — they began as function.
In the 16th century, Persian cavalry soldiers wore heeled riding boots to lock their feet into stirrups while riding and firing weapons. These early riding heels were practical, broad, and designed for stability in combat — not style.
When Persian diplomats traveled to Europe, European men adopted the look. Heels quickly became a symbol of power, rank, and masculinity among kings and aristocrats.
Only centuries later did heels become associated with women’s fashion.
History hides in plain sight.
