New York City's "Giant Pumpkin Carving Weekend" kicked off at Grand Central Station Friday as master carver Ray Villafane sculpted a carnivorous plant from parts of some of the world's largest pumpkins.
"When you carve a face or something into it it's neat to see that little fruit come alive," said Villafane.
The exhibit will feature a 2,032-pound pumpkin rising up from a strangle hold of several fanged plants and vines also carved from pumpkins.
Villafane started working on his creation at Grand Central Terminal by sculpting a man-eating plant from the parts of a pumpkin weighing in at over fourteen-hundred-pounds..
"Once we get the general shape we'll go in and start detailing add some teeth, tongue," Villafane said.
The world record setting pumpkin will be carved to resemble a bee hive with larger-than-life wasps made from other gourds buzzing around it.
Villafane started carving his haunted creation Friday morning, but it will take the entire weekend to complete.
The advice Villafane would offer backyard cavers, don't take yourself too seriously.
"Have fun, pick a good pumpkin with some thickness, it's really going to allow for you to pull some cool things out of it," Villafane said.
The exhibit moves to the New York Botanical Garden over the weekend, and runs through Halloween.
